The Police media spokesman confirmed that 16 persons were injured and one killed from the Nuwaraeliya police station blast today. He added that of the 16 injured 14 were policemen and two civilians.Police spokesman Prishanth Jayakodi further added that the suspect who was arrested for the alleged possession of weed had died in the blast.
The suspect is said to be an army deserter and had been arrested with 16g of ganja. Once the suspect was arrested he had been brought to the Nuwaraeliya police station for further questioning. At the station the suspect had threatened to blast the grenade in his pocket and had run out. At the gate of the police station the two policemen on guard had attempted to stop the escapee and the suspect had lobbed the grenade, Prishanth Jayakodi said.
