‘Diamond Jubilee’ Naval & Maritime Exhibition open for the General Public

The Naval and maritime exhibition organized in view of the SLN’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, got underway today (04th December 2010) at the Colombo Light House premises in Chaithya road, Colombo 01. Hon. Prime Minister D M Jayaratne will declare open the exhibition today at 05 p.m.

This historic event is the first Naval & Maritime exhibition since the dawn of peace in the Island which encompasses the Sri Lanka Navy’s customs, traditions and accomplishments in the past and present. Many prestigious public and private sector institutions in the Maritime related field have also put up stalls.

The exhibitions includes educational stalls showcasing Naval and Maritime history, sailing equipment & tools, weapons and ammunition, uniforms and medals, Naval technological showpieces in the fields of marine and electrical engineering, diving and fire & rescue gear, Naval gunnery items and also weapons and vessels captured from the enemy during the humanitarian operations. Visitors will also be fortunate to witness spectacular live demonstrations by the Navy’s elite special forces, the Special Boat Squadron and the Rapid Action Boat Squadron. They will also get a rare opportunity to get onboard Naval ships and craft. The Navy Band and Orchestra will provide live musical shows from a specially made stage near the light house. The stage is built on a large boulder of stone with the sea as its backdrop. With waves crashing on to the rocks around the stage and the specially lit up surroundings will be a fantastic setting for a wonderful evening. In addition to that the visitors will also be treated to a spectacular fireworks display which will illuminate the evening sky throughout the duration of the exhibition. Refreshment stalls serving snacks and soft drinks at concessionary rates are also available.
